Help - my desktop is selected and I can't deselect it

My entire desktop somehow got selected and I cannot find a way to deselect
it. If I try to email a Word document, for example, from my desktop, the
entire desktop tries to email itself.
 
Log off and log on from the system. What exactly do you mean by "selected"?
are you entitled to claim $1,000,000,000,000 from that Nigerian business man
who got killed by American unguided missile meant for Iran?

Reboot into Safe Mode, then use System Restore to return your system to a
sane state.
 
Why are you saving a DOC file on your desktop to begin with? Or is it a
shortcut to the DOC file?
