help!!!MS patch kills laptop

I'm using a compaq presario 2100 with ms xp home. ran the latest ie
patch update, which because it gets it over a phone line, took so long
to upload. The it request to reboot, so I did. Now when it boots up
you see the following:

- the initial black screen with hardware info - a couple seconds long
(typical)
- then the windows xp home dark screen with the windows xp logo and
that little scanning bar
- screen goes black
- then compaq background screen comes up

from here I can't do any thing.

I did find that I can to that menu of safe boot, last good
configuration, etc.

in safe mode, it just show windows background with three or four safe
mode icons. I have to use the extend power button push to get out of
it.

in last known good configuration it sends me to compaq screen described
above.

This machine was running fine before this happened. I was in the
process of changing from aol to netscape isp providers. But I had done
that a couple days before the upgrade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. currently when I get into safe-mode screens
I can't access any command prompt or tool. There is no start button,
command line console. Deep space has more residual energy than I get
response from safe-mode(except the touch-pad mouse moves, right key
doesn't respond). When I go to vga safe-mode the screen responds by
getting smaller.

I was hoping someone knew either a command sequence that should work,
ctr-alt-del doesn't nor function keys, either at the compaq screen or
the safe-mode screen.

The only thing other thing that I could think of is updating the
laptop's bios. However I've never done that. Now I'm hoping to not go
there till I exhausted the option of going to one of the screens,
safe-mode or compaq's.

Please Please help me.

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying the safe mode menu (offered by pressing F8 at boot up) does NOT have the option to use
"SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT" in the list of menu options? Or that you get no prompt? Or the prompt accepts the command but it
fails?

Hi

I'm saying that it boots to either safe-mode or safe-mode with command
line. Once there nothing responds, other than able to move the mouse
pointer around.

Compaq machines, like a lot of OEM preinstalled systems offer little in the way of repair. Restore to "Factory defaults' is about
it.
