HELP!! Monitor is messed up!

I was using my computer a couple days ago when it
flickered and the image was all warped and the screen was
squished horizontally and really dark. Then it flickered
back to normal resolution. Then after a while it
flickered again and stuck. By squished, i mean really
squished, like the width of the screen was about 4 inches
wide, and stretched out really really long up and down. I
clicked the buttons on my monitor to try and shrink it
back to fit, but after a certain point, it would stop and
half of the screen would be below where I could not see
it. I went to display properties and changed the
resolution to 800x600 and it made the screen huge, but it
filled up more space. There are still two black bars on
eithe rside of my screen where I cant extend the screen.
When I start up my computer, the Window's XP screen is
usually black, but not it looks like it has a layer of
white on it, and its off balance(a little over to the
left). I know there is a point on my monitor where there
is absolutely no image, cause itll go from light dark
(where the screen cant stretch far enough), to dark
black, wehre there isnt any light at all(where I know the
image wont ever go to). Before a few days ago, my monitor
was just fine, and i havent done anything to it. My
computer is kinda old, should I get a new monitor or
what? I try to change the resolution higher(I have a 17
inch monitor)but it just goes back to the extremely
squished mode and I cant fix it. Everything is connected
correctly, and my video card has been working fine. I
dunno what to do! right nowi have it on the lowest
resolution, 800by600 and on 32 for color. I only have on
monitor, bu tI noticed on the display settings, it has
two monitors. Should it say that? I dont know what to do!
HELP!!! email me, with "MONITOR HELP!" in the subject
please!!

The problem you are describing sounds like what would be caused by a
failure in your monitor.

You have already checked to see if the cables were loose, and if
wiggling the cables did not solve the problem I bet your monitor has
failed...

See if you can borrow a known good monitor and see if the problem
follows the suspect monitor...

Usually that's caused by either a loose cable, or a dying monitor. It can also
commonly be caused by chosing a bad refresh rate. Try going into the display
properties and clicking the advanced button. There should be controls in there
to adjust the refresh rate, which might help. It's worth a try. If that, and
adjusting the monitor's controls can't fix it, I'd say your monitor is probably
dying.
