We're in the process of deploying new 2K Pro workstations. So far so
good, until I remembered that the sales department needed to have
modems installed for auto dialing out of our customer relations
module.

The is a proprietary (VB and Access) 16 bit program (we are in the
process of choosing another CRM). On the fist computer, I installed
the modem, which defaulted to COM 3, I went into the Customer program,
and hit F9 (which auto dials) and received the error, that the com
port is locked by another device. I changed the COM port to 2, went
back into the program hit F9, and bingo! it dialed for me and
connected to the person I was calling. So far so good.

The next morning, the salesman comes in turns on his computer, goes
into the program, and can't dial out - same error "port locked by
another device".

What is causing this change when the computer is shut down and
restarted. We tried to go into the bios and force the modem to use COM
3, but it is Phoenix and we couldn't find out where to change this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, the sales department is crying!

Thanks in advance

Julie

These are internal modems, right? Internal modems come with their own
"COM port". If you are not using the COM ports 1 and 2 for anything,
disable them in the BIOS and try again. You might have to shutdown,
take the modem out (if possible) reboot and shutdown, stick the modem
in again and reboot.

Hope this helps, but I'm not sure if it will...

Sorry, yes they are internal modems. One problem, is that when we go
into the bios, we can't find where to make changes to the COM port.

We did try a couple things yesterday:
1. deleted "COM1" in device manager and restarted
2. On one of the machines, we deleted the modem in device
manager, rebooted and reinstalled
3. assigned ":COM1" to the modem in device manager
4. In options, we chose "COM1" in the program drop down box
We were able to dial on 2 of the 3 machines, even after reboot.

We'll see if it continues. . . .

Thanks for your help.

Do you know how to change COM ports in Phoenix Bios?

That's the restricted two page thing isn't it? Sorry, I don't know. If
I come across one in the two days or so, I'll post here, but it looks
like you are on your way to solving it..
