help me installing business contact manager please(I get errors!)

G

G

Hi, I am trying to install business contact manager on top of my Office 2003
(MSDN download which originally had no BCM).
I installed Office 2003 complete....everything on it....
if I double click on setup.exe I get the following message

"version detection failed for C:\bcm\dotnetfx.exe. Insure that the installer
exists at the specified location.
Message returned: The specified image file did not contain a resource
section."

(I have WinXP sp1 with abosultely all the patched and updates
installed...including dotnet framework service packs...i tried reinstalling
those first, but got the same error)

The setup.ini file has the following content
------------------
[Bootstrap]
Msi=MSBCM.msi
ReqMem=128
ReqCPU=400
'ReqOutlookBuild=11.0.4920.2
'LanguageDirectory=enu
'ProductName=Microsoft Business Contacts Manager
'DialogText=
'CaptionText=
'ErrorCaptionText=
'FxInstallerPath=c:
----------------------
so I tried changing 'FxInstallerPath=c:
to an actual path where dotnetfx can be found (by first removing the ' and
then placing the path)
so then the error was the same except that instead of saying "version
detection failed for C:\bcm\dotnetfx.exe" it replaced the
c:\bcm\dotnetfx.exe with the new path...so no good there

then I tried installing by double clicking on
msbcm.msi
this took me to the standard install dialogs...I clicked next a couple of
times and was on my way....until the very end.....when the installer goes
into the "starting services" section I get the following error

"Error 1721. There is a problem with this windows installer package. A
program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your
support personnel or package vendor"
after I click ok on that message it rolls back and uninstalls everything.

I read something about MSDE being required for BCM (I dont know if its true)
so I installed MSDE from the office 2003 cd.

any ideas what this can be?

thanks,
G

G,

I'm getting the same error as well. I can't figure out what's causing the
problem. Have you solved your problem yet?

No, not yet...i still have the same problem.
Hopefully somebody will be able to guide us into finding the
solution. Do you know where the LOG file for the BCM installation
resides? Maybe that can shed some light into the problem, but I
dont know where it is.

G,

I got mine to work! First, I downloaded the "dotnetfx.exe" redistributable and
placed it in the root of the folder where setup.exe is located. Then I
downloaded a SQL 2000 patch from the Microsoft website.

Here is the link to the actual file...

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...a57917bc61/SQL2000-KB815495-8.00.0818-ENU.exe

Here is the link to the page...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9D-BD44-40C5-ADD3-B8C99618E68D&displaylang=en

Okay, when you download it, place it in the same folder as "setup.exe" and
rename it "SQL2000-KB815495.exe"

If you can't find the "dotnetfx.exe" file, let me know and I'll email you the
link.

Let me know if this works!

Thanks,

The sql patch is almost 15 megabytes and the
dotnetfx.exe is 25 megabytes?
Is this correct? The dotnetfx is the complete dot net framework...i do have
this installed...I wonder why I need to reinstall it....maybe I just have to
point to my installation...if I only find where it is....
what about the sql patch? is this MSDE? cause I have that isntalled
also.
thanks for the help..I am downloading both as I type....

G,

Yes, you're right about the file sizes. However, I don't believe it's a
question of having to reinstall the two files, but rather for the installation
to see that exist while installing.

If they do not exist, then the install will fail.

I hope that makes sense, but more importantly, I hope it works!

Please let me know!
