Help me get started.

Hi, I need some help.
I am trying to get my head around how to develop/deploy software to an
XP Embedded based touch screen.
From what I understand, I need something called the XP Embedded
Software Development Kit.
I need to:
1) Develop my custom application (using something like MS Visual
studio 6.0).
2) Use the XP Embedded Dev kit to build an 'image'. Combining this
with the binary of my custom app, and any libraries required.
3) Somehow get this image into the touch screen.
4) Reboot touch screen.

Is this the way to proceed?
If so, then it looks like I need the XP embedded Dev kit.

Any coments appreciated.

That is close. You will have to create device driver components for any
driver components that are not in the database and are critical to your
system.

To build the XPe OS, the tool you need is the Windows XP Embedded SP2
Feature Pack 2007, there is an Update Rollup 1.0 that is the latest update.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for your info.
It looks like I have a learning curve ahead of me. I have worked with
embedded devices before (using other operating systems). I am hoping
that my other knowledge will help a little.

Anyway, this 'XP Embedded SP2 Feature Pack 2007'. I presume that I
have to pay to use it? My employers have an MSDN subscription, can I
get hold of it through that?
Are there any other 'third party' tools which will do the same thing
for less money?

My problem is that I have costed a small job based on using XPe, but I
hadn't anticipated that there would be a cost for the development
environment. My inital investigations led me to believe that I could
develop my custom app using Visual Studio 6.0, and it would just work!
Without much modification.
It seems that this info was only partially correct.

You have to purchase the tools from a Microsoft distributor. It is not part
of MSDN. You cold get the evaluation tools so you can prove out the system
in the short term, but you will still need to purchase the real tools from
the distributor.

There are training classes and books on XPe to help get up the learning
curve.
