HELP!! Links (between several ppt files) are broken

G

Guest

i don't know why all the links are broken when I save the PowerPoint file
from ppt to pps. They work if the original ppt files are in the same folder
with the pps files. But after i cut the ppt files out, they don't.

Does anybody know what should I do if I just want to save the files as
PowerPoint Show?

Thank you.

You seem to be misunderstanding the difference between PPT and PPS files.
In short, there is no difference in the file itself or in the file's
behavior, except that when double clicked, the PPS starts in show mode,
while the PPT starts in edit mode.

So if you need a bunch of files to run the PPT, you will need the same files
to run it as a PPS. Make sure that all the files that are to be included in
the presentation are in the same folder as the PPT *prior* to 'inserting'
then (really it's linking, don't be confused by the wording), this will help
to insure they will remain linked when the files are moved. See:

email a presentation

I suspect that the links break because the file names are different. If
you point to foo.ppt, and you rename the file to foo.pps, the link will
break. However, you might not have to do too much work to fix this. If
you launch a .pps file and then link to a .ppt file, the .ppt file will
run as a show. Therefore, if all your links are from one file, you can
rename that file and not worry about the other ones. If, however, you
link from several files, you'll probably have to redo your links after
renaming the files.

As an aside, you might not notice that the file names have changed if
your extensions are hidden. foo.ppt and foo.pps look the same if your
extensions are hidden, but they really have different names. In my
opinion, hiding the extensions causes more problems than it solves (it
makes Windows look friendlier while it is really less friendly).

Thanks for you guys' help! I can link all the presentations now. But when I
try to open another presentation which is password protected, it askes me
either enter a password or open a read-only file. How can I avoid this and go
to that presentation directly?

Thanks!

Remove the password or use the PowerPoint Viewer. The Viewer won't ask because
read only is the only option available in the Viewer, i.e.iIt can't be used to
edit or modify files.
