Help: Linked Table with Excel #Num!

B

Barbara

I try to understand why!!:

I Have a linked table with excel.

The linked table is built by access itself and the types
of the fields are done automatically
by access.

I have a field in the linked table with
type=texte:the excel spreadsheet has some records with
numbers only (some are we232 and others 43,42,11),
it give me #Num! (overflow)where I have numbers. Does
anyone has the solution
to transfere my excel spreadsheet without this kind of
error. I'm agree to have all Types=text in excel and
Access linked table.but it doesn't work

Thanks,

Barb

Since Excel does not have "strong datatyping", Access make a guess -
often wrong - as to the datatype of Excel fields. I believe it looks
at the first few (ten maybe?) rows of the spreadsheet before assigning
the datatype; if these rows contain only numbers, it'll assign a
numeric datatype.

I've given up on using linked tables in this way: I'll generally
create an Access table with the desired datatypes, link to Excel and
run an Append query to populate the table. Even this might fail - one
getaround is to put a "dummy" row first in the table with
THIS_COLUMN_IS_TEXT_DUMMY! in the columns that you want to be
interpreted as text.
