Help - I've lost my cursor i-beam!

My i-beam (vertical bar) cursor has turned into a dot and I don't know how to
get it back. This is driving me nuts! I've tried tools - options - and
turning on and off 'enable click and type' as well as turning on and off 'use
smart cursuring'. I've also gone into control panel and tried altering the
mouse settings from there, but have so far found nothing to solve it.

I have been toggling between different applications using alt+tab and may
have inadvertently added another key (I've also got em dash set up for
ctl+alt+1). Reading through other postings, it seems that I could have hit
the 'destructive cursor', but the advice - to use the esc key to deactivate
it - doesn't seem to work.

I'd be really grateful for any advice!

Try switching to 500% zoom and back.
