I received this Email the first of April. I then sent proof of purchase of a
new laptop in December to the Buffalo address and heard nothing.
Anyone know where I can go to ask Microsoft if this is a hoax or legitimate?

Sounds like a virus (a troian). But modern Windows are not what they were
before, like Win 98 or 2000.

I
Thank you,

Microsoft Technology Guarantee Customer Support.

The Microsoft Technology Guarantee Program offered free or low
cost upgrades to Vista and/or Office 2007 to consumers who
purchased boxed retail editions of Windows XP and/or Office
2003. Translated, you had to buy the software from a store. It
did not apply to OEM versions that may have come preinstalled
on your laptop. On confirmation of your order, a copy of your
sales slip as well as the boxtop from the software package had
to be sent to Buffalo. BTW, it should be PO Box 1096, not 109.

Orders were placed through this web site.

Notice the line at the bottom of the page about pre-loaded
software. The procedure to obtain upgrades for OEM versions of
XP and/or Office 2003 would have come from the manufacturer of
your laptop. I can only speak from my experience, but Dell
included explicit instructions on how to obtain the upgrades.

Either you followed the wrong procedure or your manufacturer
did not offer the upgrades.

If I was in your spot, I'd contact the laptop manufacturer.

Good luck
