Help! I cannot turn windows xp sp2 firewall on

I don't know how it started. All of a sudden there is the red x icon from
windows security alerts telling me my firewall is disabled. But I cannot
turn it on. I tried running my antivirus and several antispyware programs
but the problem persists.

You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP
