As I was loading the Explorer 6 updates from Microsoft on my
new PC with Windows XP Pro, the home page locked up to
www.msn.com. I have checked for virus and also run Spybot
and Ad-Aware. Nothing showed up bad ! How to unlock this
Home Page lockup? Please help.

Check settings in Spybot >> Tools >> IE Tweaks >> Miscellaneous locks
UN-Check: "Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)"

HTH

IE Home page grayed locked.

If you are using Spybot - Search & Destroy

Spybot - S & D
[+] Tools
IE Tweaks
Miscellaneous locks
UNCheck: Lock IE start page setting against user changes (current user)

Read the instructions at the top.
Scroll down to...

Click on Home Page Unlock

If you have XP Pro, check this setting in Group Policy.

Disable changing home page settings

Or check these registry settings...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Control Panel
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\
Internet Explorer\Control Panel

Value Name: HomePage
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Not locked
1 = Locked

Home page setting changes unexpectedly, or you cannot change your home page
setting

Thank you. I have even removed Spybot. Didn't change anything.
I am trying to cleanup the registry. Will post as I find something.

You need not remove Spybot. The suggestion was to only turn off the feature to lock changes to the home page.

Thank you for the help. I got frustrated enough so I am
reloading the XP Pro again. Hope the same trouble does
not start again.

That's way too extreme an action for just fixing the ability to set the home page.

Yep! And perhaps the worst thing is that if he doesn't find out what caused
the problem, he will very likely repeat the actions that caused it, and end
up back where he started with the same problem.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't have any software loaded
on this PC yet. Just started to load OP system and update IE6.
During IE6 updating, the 'Home page lockup' problem started.
I did check with Ad-Aware and SpyBot, but that did not find
any problem. I made sure the Firewall was working properly.

If I load the WinXP Pro SP2 CD, I have this Home Page lockup
problem, but if I load the WinXP Pro SP1 CD, and then update
the SP2 from the 270 Meg file, all works well. This was the
biggest surprise I ever had since........... Thanks again.
