I have an assignment stored on a floppy (hmm those square hard disks you can
see I have no idea what I am doing) which last night my husband saved and
then removed possibly before it had finished saving although the document had
been saved to disk several times that day.

I can open all other files on the disk just not this one and when I try the
disk drive makes a noise and takes quite awhile before it comes up with

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions:
*Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
*Use the file open dialouge box to locate the file.

I really need this document please tell me there is a way I can recover it!!

Unlikely.

Never save documents directly to floppy diskette. Save them directly to the
hard drive and copy them to floppy if you must - but never - ever save
directly to floppy diskette.

Have a look at PC Inspector File Recovery from
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm you may be able
to recover the file with this.

Thankyou so much I was able to recover part of it with that program. It
appears as though some has been lost.

I cannot thankyou enough

I've never heard that before--why not direct to floppy??

I have seen this in lab environments too many times.

Remember - when using many applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) a
temporary file is written instead of overwriting the original file. Floppy
diskettes merely do NOT have the available space to accommodate this. If
your file becomes 1/2 the size of diskette or just 1/2 the size that's left
on the diskette (fairly simple to accomplish) - then when it writes its
temporary file while you have it open - you are already in trouble - because
there is no space left on the diskette.

Not to mention - the way most people treat diskettes - I would much rather
use a gmail account - upload my file to it when I am done each time - and
then copy it to a floppy as well for easy access. Saving anything to one
single place is just "bad practice"!

Luckily - it looks like the OP was able to recover some of the document..

And probably the reason "some has been lost" was the one I gave above.

*Never* save a file direct from an application onto a floppy diskette and
*never* only have one copy - unless - for whatever *secret spy reason* -->
that is your intention.
