Hi all ~

My wife works for a small non-profit and lately many of their client PCs
have been experiencing slowdowns when accessing shared files from the
server.

The tech they've hired has told them that they need to remove all desktop
icons from their PCs because it slows their systems down.

I'm sure that this is not true, but her management does not have a lot of
tech training. I would appreciate confirmation of my position (unless I'm
wrong). They know I'm a tech, but they just think of me as my wife's
husband so it doesn't really register. Please include all the ego wall
titles and certifications in your responses. It will help to make my case.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Sorry, can't give you any titles here.

You should be able to demonstrate it for them, one way or the other, pretty
quickly with another account with a clear desktop.. Then the users can
just go back to their preferred desktops when the test is over. Quick and
harmless.

If the systems can access local files at normal speeds, network traffic is
being slowed by something else.

something to keep in mind is
that windows is a stable operating
system. therefore, if it begins
to become dysfunctional it is either
a configuration problem, hardware
problem or the result of a faulty or
malicious third party program.

to prove this, you could use any
pc that is void of any data. then install
windows onto it and "nothing else".

comparing the functionality of a virgin
o.s. with one of the dysfunctional one
will shed lots of light....

They have hired a very poor tech.

I'm sure that this is not true, but her management does not have a lot of

I have no titles, but I can assure you that you are absolutely
correct. The tech is wrong.

If that is what was really said, it's got to be one of the most absurd
assertions I've ever heard. Is this alleged "tech they've hired" a
member of Best Buy's Geek Squad? I can't think of anyone else who could
possibly be so woefully ignorant.

The Windows Desktop is just another folder, and the icons are just
primarily just shortcuts (very small files) that could have absolutely
no possible affect upon network performance.

The only thing I can add here is it's not good to have to use a big bitmap
image as wallpaper on your desktop. Other than that icons don't have any
effect

The first thing to correct is the name "icon" versus a "shortcut." An icon
is a picture that can be assigned to a shortcut. Shortcuts have no real
measurable effect on a PC's performance. While I personally think shortcuts
should be on the start menu so as to avoid confusion, others like them
scattered all about and seem to be able to deal with it. If you need some
credentials, why don't you see if you can enlist Fred Langa:
