I volunteered to "clean up" a laptop computer for my
boss. All I did was remove temp files, run Spybot &
Adware, removed unused programs, then defragged. In the
middle of defrag I got a black screen. I had to re-boot
but now all I get is this error:
Windows could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
This laptop is running Windows 2000 - I do NOT have a
Windows 2000 CD and I always do NOT have the admini
password. I called my boss and he doesn't know where the
disk and doesn't even remember setting a password three
years ago when he bought the laptop. Can any suggest
anything I can do to get this working before work in the
morning!!!!!!

You might as well go to bed and start the job tomorrow
with a clear head and the proper tools.

If your machine crashed in the middle of a defragging
operation then you're probably short of a few system
files (at best), or your file system is hosed (at worst).
Personally I don't think that the benefits of defragging
are worth the risks. In many cases you would not notice
the difference unless you used a stop watch.

Here is my suggested course of action. Take one step at a time
and only move to the next step if unsuccessful.
- Get the Win2000 installation CD. Suggest tactfully to
your boss that it's worth a lot of money - surely he
stored it a safe place.
- Read the information in this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;103673
If you system drive is on an NTFS partition then you have
to boot into the Recovery Console to access c:\boot.ini. This
requires booting from your Win2000 CD.
- Boot from the CD and select "Repair" when prompted.
- Install Windows over the top of the existing installation.
- Reload Windows into a different folder.

When finished, do some planning ahead:
- Start a register with the Win2000 licence number. Print
a hard copy.
- Store the Win2000 CD in a safe place.
- Create a second admin account. It's silly relying on one
single admin account - you would not rely on a single
house key, would you?
- Store the details of that second account in a safe place,
together with the Win2000 licence number.

Thanks, I'll try these suggestions in the morning if I can
locate the Windows 2000 disk. I tried booting with a
Windows xp disk but I still get the same error message. I
can't even boot into safe mode! I hope what you suggested
works but i have a feeling it won't boot to the win 2000
disk either!

You can use the WinXP CD to boot into the Recovery
Console, then examine and/or modify c:\boot.ini. Use
the "type" command to see its contents, then make a
new version on some other machine and copy it back
to the problem PC with a floppy disk.

I drove to the office and found the win 2000 disk. I can
not boot to it. I can not boot to safe mode. I can not
boot to sage mode with command prompt. The diagnostics
disk will also not do anything. I just get the same black
screen message!!! Any ideas on how to get around this
error mesesage?

Yeah! I found a site that explained how to make the pc
boot from cd. went through the steps and now it has
recognized the win200 disk!!!

Sounds like you're still not booting from the CD-Rom at this point. Possibly
look for the key stroke at POST to start from the CD-Rom drive or check the
mobo manual for instructions.

Ok, I got the pc to boot from cd, however, I can't run
repair or re-install win 2000. I have since tried to
instll win xp prof and exin xp home edition to no avail.
i get a blue screen error Kernel_data_inpage_error
win32k.sys - sometimes i get a error stating it can not
copy files from the cd (all 3 cd's do this) - if i get
past these two errors i get the critical system
information file syssetup.inf layout is corrupt or
missing. Now when I boot i get "no hard drive
found"!!!!!!!!!!!

| Ok, I got the pc to boot from cd, however, I can't run
| repair or re-install win 2000.
* What happens when you try? You didn't mention the drive controller
(possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but to
start the recovery console you may need to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks
or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting
your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select
S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the
manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's controller in
drive "A"

I have since tried to
| instll win xp prof and exin xp home edition to no avail.
| i get a blue screen error Kernel_data_inpage_error

| missing. Now when I boot i get "no hard drive
| found"!!!!!!!!!!!
* Possibly harware failure or the controller driver issue mentioned above.
You may also want to download a diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site.

I'm trying, but it's asking for me to put the hardware
support disk in drive A. I don't have a floppy disk. i
have the win 2000 cd and i have a dell drivers cd!

* If you need to add third party support for the drive controller then
you'll need a floppy drive.

I think that you should restore that file using recovery console (if
it is not installed on your boss laptop you will need to find CD).

Also you can reset local admin SAM password using bunch of tools -- I
use CIA Commander but it is not free. Use google -- I saw somwhere
this so-called Linux Windows Rescure CD.
