Hi,

Could someone please recommend a good software to create help files? Also,
if it possible to embed other files i.e. Excel, PDF etc, into CHM or HLP
files?

Microsoft Visual Studio.NET provides a HTML Help composer kind of
application. But maybe you can download it from download.microsoft.com
too.

IMO it doesn't make sense to include Excel and PDF files into CHM files...
