Help! Cannot get Windows Mail (Vista) to connect to email

D

Diane

Help please...I have been using Windows Mail for 2 weeks without any
problems. This afternoon, I cannot connect at all. A Windows Security Logon
box keeps asking me for my user name and password. When I type in both, it
does not recognize it. This is what the error message says:

Account: 'SWB', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Server
Response: '-ERR invalid username/password', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Comcast was down earlier and I use Kaspersky for anti-virus. Any help would
be much appreciated. Thanks!

It means that your username/password login is not being accepted.
You can test your password by logging in to webmail:
https://login.comcast.net/login
If that works, it proves you have the correct username and password.
A likely reason for the username/password failing is account corruption.
One thing you should try as a possible quick fix is to delete that corrupted
mail account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate that account.

If that doesn't fix it, more drastic measures will have to be taken.
Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:

Gary I am having the same problems; I've checked my account and the settings,
have set my user name and passwork; and it still won't let me get in. My
security is minimal with the mail; I am using Qwest (a phone company). Is
there anyway for me to test my password?

I am having the same issue. I have tried deleting and recreating the account
without success. I use McAfee anti-virus and the email is disabled on it. I
tried testing my username/password by logging in to webmail and it tells me
that my email address is not valid. What else can I do?

Joyce, I need a little more data from you. When you get that prompt for
username & password, click 'Cancel'. That will produce an error message.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.

Cmims3, if your provider's webmail tells you that your email address is
not valid, there's nothing that can be done to fix it from your end. Call
your mail provider's tech support and explain the problem.

First of all, go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Make sure that "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not enabled.
If that setting was correct, the most likely culprit for your problem is your
antivirus. Which antivirus are you running? Some of them cause problems
with Windows Mail over time.

Verizon Setup - compare your setup to this tab-by-tab setup (only need 3 of
the tabs):
General tab: Enter "Mail Account" (this is just a reference - whatever you
want to call it)
User Information: Name (your name), Email address
(your full e-address)
Check the box "Include this account when receiving
mail or synchronizing" (generally desired option)
Apply

Servers tab: Server Information: "My incoming mail server is a - POP3 -
server", Incoming Mail (POP3) = incoming.verizon.net and
Outgoing mail (SMTP) = outgoing.verizon.net (NOTE:
do NOT check those SSL boxes on in or out ports)
Incoming Mail Server: Email username: Enter ONLY the
first part of your e-address - BEFORE the @ symbol, and
select the radio button "Log on using clear text
authentication"
Outgoing Mail Server: Check the box "My server
requires authentication" and click on the "Settings" button - select
the radio button "Log on using" and in "Account
name" and enter just the first part of your e-address (BEFORE the
@ symbol ONLY)
Apply

Advanced tab: Server Port Numbers: Outgoing mail (SMTP) = 587
Incoming mail (POP3) = 110
Delivery: Check the box, "Leave a copy of
messages on server" and "Remove fromm server when deleted
from 'Deleted Items'" (both are generally a
desired options)
Apply
Okay (all the way out)

If you still get errors, please copy and paste them in here so we can see
where it went wrong.

I think it is better to provide links to information instead of copying and
pasting it. That way, when the information changes, people get the current
information. In this newsgroup especially, people have a tendency to get old
information and then someone has to tell them that the information they are
using is old.

No copy / paste - sorry, I forgot where I was when I typed all that in !!
LOLOL !! Can't get more current than a personal working setup !! If they
can muddle through it, it will work !
