HELP! CANNOT CONNECT TO SQL SERVER

I need help urgently to connect to SQL Server on my desktop (running on
Windows XP Pro, with Office Developer installed) from my laptop (also running
Windows XP Pro). Both machines communicate easily as I transfer files between
the two.

But now I am working on an Access Project, and need to work from the laptop
occasionally. So I need to connect to the Access Project on the desktop. When
I pick *File/Connection/Data Link Properties-Connection Tab* from the laptop,
the server name on the desktop is shown when the two machines are connected,
but does not when they are not. However i have not been able to connect to
the server, probably because of the "gibberish" on the other Tabs of the Data
Link Properties.

Can someone help me out please?

Sp2...). Start>>run>>firewall.cpl
Try again.

If that fails:
Go to the desktop where the SQL Server is, open up Control panel>>admin
tools>>services. make sure MS SQL Server Service is running. If not, start
it.
Try again.

The Firewall was turned off in both machines. *Start>Run>>Firewall.cpl*
produced error message: *Windows cannot find 'firewall.cpl.'* in both
machines.

Turn off the firewall that SP2 installed on both machines (if they are at
Sp2...). Start>>run>>firewall.cpl
Try again.

If that fails:
Go to the desktop where the SQL Server is, open up Control panel>>admin
tools>>services. make sure MS SQL Server Service is running. If not, start
it.
Try again.

Go into the LOG folder in the SQL Server install directory

on my machine:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG

Look in the file called ERRORLOG (no extension) for lines like:

2005-05-05 17:25:51.72 server SQL server listening on 172.20.1.72: 1433.
2005-05-05 17:25:51.72 server SQL server listening on 127.0.0.1: 1433.
2005-05-05 17:25:52.38 server SQL server listening on TCP, Named Pipes.

Paste those lines back.

My day ends at 5:00 Central....highly unlikely that I will see this thread
between then and 8am Monday morning

When I tried to open the ErrorLog, a message came that Windows cannot open
the file. Attempts to use the Web also failed.

open it using notepad...wordpad won't do it (it is in use by SQL Server)

Turn off the firewall that SP2 installed on both machines (if they are
at
Sp2...). Start>>run>>firewall.cpl
Try again.

If that fails:
Go to the desktop where the SQL Server is, open up Control
panel>>admin
tools>>services. make sure MS SQL Server Service is running. If not,
start
it.
Try again.

When I test connection, I get the error message:

I need help urgently to connect to SQL Server on my desktop
(running
on
Windows XP Pro, with Office Developer installed) from my laptop
(also
running
Windows XP Pro). Both machines communicate easily as I transfer
files
between
the two.

But now I am working on an Access Project, and need to work from
the
laptop
occasionally. So I need to connect to the Access Project on the
desktop.
When
I pick *File/Connection/Data Link Properties-Connection Tab* from
the
laptop,
the server name on the desktop is shown when the two machines are
connected,
but does not when they are not. However i have not been able to
connect
to
the server, probably because of the "gibberish" on the other Tabs
of
the
Data
Link Properties.

Can someone help me out please?

Couple of things...

Install SP3...you are currently at RTM (release to market)

Go into Enterprise Manager on the desktop and de-select the AutoClose option
on each of the databases....that's why you are getting all those lines about
Starting database 'whatever'

databases had the option de-selected, some grayed-out.
But the problem is still there: When I test connection, I get Microsoft Data
Link Error: *Test connection failed because of an error in initializing
provider. [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect().] SQL Server does not exist or
Server denied.* And when I try to select a database, I get the latter half of
the error stated above.

I'm not sure if this will have anything to do with it, but pre-sp3 SQL
Servers are vulnerable to security attacks.
