Help and Support

I am using Windows XP Pro. When I click on Start => Help and Support
=> Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update, a screen comes
up saying connecting.

It will not pass this connecting screen. I've disabled the firewall,
and I have run an antivirus as well as windows defender which both
come up clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Is Automatic Updates enabled (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525)?

To the best of your knowledge, is the machine fully patched at Windows
Update?

Can you reach Windows Update via IE Tools | Windows Update or via
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Help and Support is quirky that way. What happens if you open a connection
with another Internet app first, say Outlook Express?

Also it may be useful to know some details about your network connection.
FWIW this used to happen to me until I started making OE explicitly use
my PPPoE connection (e.g. instead of Any Connection). So in effect,
Help and Support probably sees that OE has created a "dialed" connection
and then decides that, yes, there really is an Internet connection... ; )

Good luck
