I need this service on for msinfo32 to work but its becoming a resource hog.

On startup, there is H&S service, eating 100% CPU and writing who-knows-what
to my hard disk. After about 15 seconds it quiets down and turns itself off.

I do have other things that would like to startup with my computer besides
the Almighty H&S service.

H&S will also have infrequent, random, mad, bursts of writing SOMEthing to
the harddisk that can last 15 seconds. Lets see, my SATA RAID0 writes about
97 MB's a second soooo.... 1.5 GB's of help files?

Ok, I set it to manual and stopped it and tried msinfo32 which started H&S
(and also started helpctr.exe, helpsvc.exe and wmiprvse.exe). We'll see if
that will curb it's appitite...

I have the Help and Support service set to Manual. I use Help and Support
all the time and I don't have any problems.

helpctr.exe is Microsoft Help and Support Center. I.e. Help and Support
from the Start Menu.

helpsvc.exe is the Microsoft Help Center Service.

Wmiprvse.exe is Windows Management Instrumentation and is probably
responsible for the files in %windir%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\DataColl. And may
run at any time with the hard drive trashing away.

[[System History
System Information in Windows XP provides a new view of changes to the
computer. Rather than a separate history view for each category as was shown
in Windows 98, Windows XP enables you to view all changes to the computer
since a certain date, and time.

The history information is provided in the same three main categories that
were provided in the Standard view: Hardware Resources, Components and
Software Environment. History Information is provided by WMI, and is stored
in the Extensible Markup Language (XML) data files located in
Windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Datacoll. ]]
