HELP! Active Directory and WINS are Toast!

Hi..

Newbie admin here in ID10T/Panic mode..

The power went out last night, and the UPS failed to properly shut down
the systems when it ran out of juice.

The PDC came up fine, but the File Server / BDC called SERVER002 didn't.

I got the following error on boot:

***
Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following
error: Directory Service cannot start. Error Status: 0xc00002e1. Please
click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services
Restore Mode, check the event log for more detailed information.
***

When I restart in Directory Service mode, get a WINS error:

***
WINS could not come up due to missing/corrupt database. Restore the
database using WINS Manager or winscl.exe (in the res kit) and then
restart WINS. If WINS still does not come up, start with a fresh copy of
the database. To do this:

1) delete all the files in the %%SystemRoot%%\system32\wins directory.

Note: if wins database file (typically named wins.mdb) is not in the
above directory, check the registry for the full filepath.
Delete the .mdb file.
Note: if jet*.log are not in the above directory, check the registry for
the directory path. Delete all log files.

2) net start wins

Please click on OK to terminate WINS.
***

I tried to follow the steps listed, minus the res kit (I dont think I
have one), and the error still comes up even when I delete all the files
in the wins directory. Upon boot, the same errors return.

Windows 2000 & XP users are still able to get their files from
SERVER002, but 98 and 95 users are prompted for a password.

When I try to get into Active Directory I get a box that reads "To
manage users and groups on this computer, use Local Users and Groups. To
manage users, groups, and computers in a domain, log on as a user with
domain administrative rights."

Of course, when I try to log in in Directory Service Mode, I dont have
the option to log onto the domain. It only accepts the local administrator!

Please... anybody have any ideas? I'm totally in over my head.

It would probably belp if I noted that the servers use Windows 2000
Server SP3, and the network contains a ugly mix of Win95, Win98,
Win2000, and WinXP workstations.

Actually I wasn't able to do a helluva lot while in DS Mode... But I did
come across KB article 325040 which suggested upgrading to SP4... I
performed the install, and everything was restored. Good thing I had net
access in DS mode..

Thanks for your comments!
