I am trying to type a title on the left top of the header and insert page
numbers on the right. Every time I try to insert one, the other is deleted.
If my title is in, putting in the page number erases the title. If the page
number is in, putting in the title deletes the page number. Please help me.

How do you try to align the right page number, if you type in the title on
the left then try to align the page number to the right the whole paragraph
will go to the right (so the title as well), as long as you haven't changed
word's default margins you can use the default header tab stops, after
typing the title press tab twice then you can insert or type the page number

If this is Word 2007, then using one of the Page Number building blocks will
overwrite any Header building block you've already selected. Instead use the
"Current Position" selection for the page number.

I tried your suggestion. I typed a header and tabed 2x to right. I put in a
page number and my header disappeared. I then typed a page number. The
problem was that every succeeding page was numbered 1.

Thank you. What I have to do after inserting the title in the upper left
corner is to tab twice as was suggested by Matthew, then select current
position. If I put the title in the upper left and look at page numbering
under current position, all selections appear in the upper left. However,
if I moved the curser to the right 2 tabs, the date appears in the upper
right corner even though the selections still appear to be in the upper left.

If you position the insertion point where you want the page number and use
Insert Page Number | Current Position | Simple: Plain Number, you should get
a page number at the insertion point.

If you are using a header that is centered, however, such as the Alphabet
one, then you have to left-align the paragraph, press Tab before the content
control to place it at the center tab, and then press Tab to the right of
the content control to get to the position for your page number.

If you're using a header building block such as Blank (Three Columns), then
place the insertion point in the right-most content control and use Insert
Page Number | Current Position.

How you deal with this depends on which header building block you have
chosen. If you will tell us that, we can give more specific instructions.
Unless you want something really fancy, you're better off just using the
Blank one.
