Header & Footers

Hello - can I remove a footer & page number from a specific page? For
example, everytime I go to a certain page to remove the footer and page
number, the system removes the footer and page numbers from the rest of the
document.

I want to remove all footer information from my last page - can someone let
me know if this is possible and if so, how? Thanks.

Open the footer to be changed
remove the "same as previous"
Choose "File", "Page Setup" and go to the "Page Layout tab"
Under "Header Footer" check mark the "different odd and even"
Under "Preview" choose "This point forward" & click OK

Note - Redo the header before you format the footer

Do _not_ follow the directions from turtleshelby until you have looked at:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/PageNumbering.htm.
That page shows how to have a page number only appear on certain pages or
not appear on the last page. You can use a similar method for the entire
header or footer.

The method suggested by turtleshelby will unnecessarily complicate your
document unless you have some need for additional section breaks.

This complicates the document unnecessarily. See

If you want a different header or footer on different pages of your
documents, you should insert a sectioin break - Insert | Break | Next Page.
Once you have done this go to the page where you want a different header or
footer and View | Heads and Footers| on the headers and footers toolbar click
on same as previous and then change your header or footer.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

I did not suggest a section break, believe that was Carol - but the article
you referenced is great and I see how to make 1st page different or change
the numbering but, I still don't see how to make the last page different
without using either Carol's method or mine - what am I missing (it is
Monday)?

What you suggested ("This point forward") will cause Word to insert a
section break. Instructions on how to make the last page different are in
Big Idea #7 of the referenced article. In this case you can usually use a
field such as the following:

{ IF { PAGE } < { NUMPAGES } "Text you want to appear on all pages but the
last" }

Thanks, it works and I do see where "this point forward" inserted a section
break.

The document I use this on is 140 pages has an index, 3 TOC's and undergoes
a major gov mandated rewrite yearly - if we removed the section breaks and
used these numbering guidelines in thier place, would it help to stabilize
the document?

The document has 10 true sections, but shows 45 section, due to bogus section
breaks added to change page numbering, headers/footers, etc. - would removing
the bogus breaks improve the stability of the document (remember the document
undergoes a major rewrite by many authors each year)? Appreciate everyones
comments, I learn something from them all.

What you mean is that it has 45 sections in the Word sense of the term
(portions separated by a section break) and 10 logical divisions. Assuming
that you need a section break at the beginning of each chapter (to take
advantage of the "Different first page" setting), then those will need to
stay. You also have no choice about section breaks that are required by a
change of formatting (portrait to landscape, multiple columns, etc.), but
any other breaks you can eliminate will make the document easier to work
with (because it will be more obvious what's going on in it) and less likely
to become "damaged."

What is really helpful is to eliminate, insofar as possible, all manual
*page* breaks. Where an automatic page break is required (before a certain
heading level, for example), this can be incorporated in the paragraph style
using "Page break before."
