header/footer

Hi

We created a Word document using Word 2003. When the document is opened on
a PC with Word 2000, the header or footer cannot be access (even when the
document is unprotected).

Is this incompatibility by design ? Or, is there a way that I can get
around this ?

Thanks
Steve

Choose Header and Footer from the View drop down menu...

Word 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003 share the same basic file format.
If a document containing features introduced in a later Word
version is opened using an earlier Word version, then the newer
features will not be supported in the earlier Word version.

Your description of the problem is "cannot be access". Your
description is meaningless. Specifically what happens when you
try to access the header or footer in Word 2000? If you get an
error message, please quote the message exactly and completely.

I did, but the header did not appear. Even the header/footer toolbar did
not pop up.

Let me describe the problem again.

When I click on View and select Header and Footer, the document just blinks
as if it is trying to show the header. But, that was it - a blink. I don't
see the header. I don't see the Header and Footer toolbar. Ther is no
error. So, I took the document to another PC that has Word 2003, and I can
get to the header/footer - no problem.

Hope this is clearer.

In Word 2000 can you type in this document at all? I'm asking because if the
document was protected in one of the new protections available in Word 2003,
the entire document will be locked in Word 2000.

Yes, I can type in the document (whether it is protected or not).

Let me know if you want me to email you a copy of this document; that is if
you have Word 2000 to check it out.
