header and footer on page 1 only

The solutions posted for this issue are not working for me. If I check the
box different header on first page the header and footer from the first page
disappears. The same applies if I check the box on the 2nd or 3rd pages. I
want the header and footer on page 1 only. I am trying to join 2 document s
together from different files and this creates the problem.
Any suggestions.

The "usual" assumption about headers/footers for the first page only option
is that the user doesn't want a header/footer on the 1st page. So, when you
specify the Different First Page option, the 1st page is separated from the
latter pages, and the header/footer goes with the subsequent pages.

The Different First Page option is applied on a per section basis. Hence, if
pages 1-50 are all one section, then it makes no difference what page you
are on when you choose this setting. Page 1's header/footer will be
independent from that of pages 2-50. Page 1 can have one header, while pages
2-50 can all have a header that's different from page 1, but pages 2-50 will
all have the same header as each other.

All this means is that you can now manipulate the 1st versus subsequent
header/footers independently.

So, after enabling Different First Page, go into the first page header area
and set it up as you like. Then, go into page 2 and set it up as you like
(e.g., delete it if you don't want it on pages 2 through the end of that
section). Will will now maintain those headers (or footers) independently.

If you need more variation and control than this, you can insert section
breaks and disable the Same as Previous option in the header/footer toolbar.

I hope this helps.

This is working as designed. When you create a header, you create it in the
Header pane. Checking the box gives you a separate First Page Header. If
that's where you actually want the header you created, then you need to cut
it from the Header and paste it into the First Page Header. For more on how
headers and footers work, see

letterhead (and to understand how "Different first page" works), see
