HDD will not boot and Norton Ghost Warning!!!

Hell

I though I would post this just in case it will save someone from the several days of insanity I suffered this week

If your XP HDD misteriously refuses to boot after a restart and you have done everything you can think of to resue it, if you have Norton Ghost installed on the PC, it is likely to be the cause. For some tasks, Ghost creates a "virtual boot disk partition" in the system root and changes your boot partition from active. Occasionally the "virtpart.dat" file (the file that stores the "virtual boot disk partition") becomes corrupt and unbootable. When this happens, your boot partition will look absolutely stellar, but will not boot for anything! Nothing will fix the problem except for the "GHboot.exe" that Norton conveniently includes with the app

Here is a link to an article on the Symantec support site: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ghost.nsf/docid/200209251052272

Be sure to read the "how to use ghreboot" and "Cannot exit from the Ghost 7.5 Virtual Boot Partition" articles linked in the first

I found way too many calls for help with an HDD refusing to boot while desparately searching for an answer. Because I never saw any mention of this Ghost problem in three days of searching and yesterday, for an answer, I would have eagerly traded the 12 year collection of certification acronyms that my ego occasionally makes me add to my signature line, I thought maybe, just maybe, this will help another desparate soul like mine!

Thanks for sharing that tip! You're right--that's the sort of thing that
drives us crazy when it happens, and the fix is often so simple in
hindsight.

Just read the link. Hell! It seems that there are more instances of when it
"won't" work, than when it will! Glad I standardized on Drive Image in the
early 90's. (-:

Symantec has now taken over PowerQuest. Do this mean that their
(PowerQuest) will disappear?
