HDD failure

Hey,

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 300 GB drive that has
decided after about a year not to be recognized any longer.
In POST, it reads as a string of numbers, then the system
hangs before going into Windows. Just for kicks I put it in
another machine; same thing. I then put it in an USB/IDE
enclosure and tried to read it externally from three
different machines; nothing.
It spins up fine, so I'm getting power to it, but I'm
thinking maybe the controller died? Any ideas? If this is
the case, is it a pretty easy thing to replace the
controller board? Never done it.

And I think Seagate do a long warrantee.

If purchased recently, the drive should have come with a five year warranty.

It's delicate, and you need to get the EXACT right one. Animal
scacrifice may be required for the sucessful completion of this ritual.

You may, just for kicks try changing jumper settings first. Sometimes a
controller board doesn't die all at once, and one of the other settings
may work.(not too likely, but may as well try, it will do no harm)

There is an excellent chance of 100% data recovery if you send it
straight to a data recovery professional, as the platters are probably
undamaged.
