HD Upgrade

I used Norton Ghost to copy my old HD to a bigger new
HD. After resetting the HD jumpers, the system still
boots from the old HD. I was told that Windows XP
remembers the size and brand of HDs so even I had reset
the jumpers the system still goes to the old HD for
booting.

I tried disconnecting the old HD but the system does not
boot in that case.

What is the right way to do the HD upgrade pls?

Thanks

XP remembers nothing, it is merely booting from the first active partition.

I would now do a repair install on the new hard drive, it
will retain settings. Your old hard drive will act as your
back-up in case there is a problem and you have to do a
clean install.

You have multiple partitions on the older hard drive - correct?

Rex Ma:
1. First of all, are you absolutely certain that both your source and
destination disks are not defective? And that your source disk is bootable
and without any file corruption issues affecting it? Indicate the makes &
models of the two HDs involved.

2. When you say you used "Norton Ghost to copy my old HD...", you do mean
that you used that program to directly *clone* the contents of your old disk
to the new one, right? And that this was a "disk-to-disk" clone, right? And
not where you cloned individual partition(s) of a multi-partitioned source
disk to your destination disk, right?

3. When you began the cloning process, the destination disk was jumpered
either as a Slave to your source disk or connected on the Secondary IDE
channel, right? And you're sure it was properly connected and jumpered
correctly, right? And (again!) you're *absolutely* sure your destination
disk is not defective, right?

4. When you undertook the cloning process, did it proceed without incident?
You're certain that you correctly selected the source & destination disks?
Was there any indication during the cloning process that something was
amiss?

5. And you are using either Ghost 2003 or Ghost 9, right?

6. When both drives are connected - your original disk as Primary Master and
your second disk as Primary Slave or connected on the Secondary IDE
channel - can you access that second drive after booting to your original
drive?

7. I assume you've retried the cloning process a number of times, but always
with the same results, right?

8. What happens when you connect the supposedly-cloned drive as Primary
Master with your original drive disconnected? And when you do this you're
sure that it is properly connected as Primary Master and jumpered correctly
in that position, right? Presuming it doesn't boot, what error message (if
any) do you get?

After cloning, remove the old drive and boot with only the clone drive
connected.
