hd free space

I have installed WinXp. I choose the new install option
(vs upgrade). I lose all apps, docs, files as the setup
said I would. I would expect to recover used space on the
hd. There was no change. I still am using 8gb of a 10gb
hd. Why?

If the HDD has not been formatted during the Windows installation the
data is still on the disk but not available in this Windows
installation.
Else this may be due to that the HDD is not recognized correctly and
is formatted as an 8-GB-drive.
