I run windows xp home with sp2 installed with all the latest updates

i connect using a cable dsl modem directly to this computer, but the
connection drops at random and all i need to do is use the repair feature and
it starts to work again, it stops me from enjoying some online games i like
to play.

I have tried many things and read alot of info about this but havent seen a
fix that worked for me...

If i hook up a different computer using the same cable modem i dont have
this problem, so there must be something i can do to fix my computer.

If anyone has something i could try i give my thanks in advance

What exactly do you see when the "connection drops"? Do you reboot after
repairing the connection?

Try "ipconfig /release" followed by "ipconfig /renew".

What is the connection to the modem - Ethernet or USB? Do you have the latest
drivers?

What firewall do you have? Other security products?

When my connection drops my computer stops receiving information but tries to
send, the ip adress still shows as normal most of the time this happens.( i
dont really see anything other than the connection icon in task bar will not
receive info)

i do not need to reboot after i repair the connection comes back right away
and will work for sometime before going down again in the same way

i have done the release renew more than once but it doesnt seem to have any
effect other than just repairing my connection for a short time.

i connect using ethernet cable and i currently use Norton 2005 but have
tried to disable all firewalls and uninstalled it even, but the problem still
continues.

i hope this is all the info you needed... i could try to connect using USB
from my modem if you think that would help?

If it was all the info I needed, I'd have a solution right here. Sorry...

Sometimes you have to work at it a bit. If you're using USB on the other
computer, maybe that would be a good thing to try, otherwise keep looking.

So time for more details.

How often does this typically happen? Any typical network activity when it
happens?

How long did you leave the other computer connected, before deciding that the
problem wasn't happening with that computer?

What's the differences between the other computer and this one?

Have you updated the drivers for the Ethernet card? How about the power
settings - is it set to allow the computer to turn the card off to save power?
If so, de select that.

How about you get PingPlotter (free) from <http://www.pingplotter.com/>, and
start it pinging your ISPs DNS server. See what its showing when the problem is
happening.

Besides Norton what security products do you have? Norton is a good start, but
it is not an entire Layered Defense. Try a complete malware diagnostic, ending
with HijackThis and expert advice.

It seems to happen at random, sometimes i can getonly 2 minutes after
repairing and sometimes i can get just about an hour. It happens when im
surfing the web using IE or when im playing an online game such as WoW and
not using IE at all, it will disconnect when no one is using the computer
aswell.

The other computer i used for more than a week and was not disconnected in
this manner, both computers conect in the same way both using integrated
network cards, but from different companies.

I have the most recent drivers for my SiS 900 integrated lan for my asus
terminator P4 computer that will work, the other comptuer uses a realtek
network card(integrated)

I have turned off the power saving features of my network card, i seen it
mentioned in other posts and tried it, but still have the same problem... it
is still currently set to off.

I tried pingplotter and ping both of the DNSservers listed under the details
of my connection, everything seems to be working well... but i think my
connection did drop during the ping and pingplotter prgram brought my
connection back without me having to repair it, i will wait till my
connection goes down again and try this again.

As far as anti spy programs i run adaware/spybot/microsoft antispy and
trendmicros new anti spy

here is a hijackthis log i just made

destination host is unreachable when i ping my DNS servers after my
connection drops

and pingplotter did not bring my connection back like i thought it might have

As soon as i repair my connection, pingplotter starts to work and shows
everything working well as far as i can tell.

here is a hijackthis log i just made

<SNIP>

Well, I did say "expert advice", which is not, to say, here. But I can usually
spot anything pretty obvious, and there's nothing interesting in your HJT log.

So where are we? One week with no disconnects on Computer A, 2 minutes to 1
hour between disconnects on Computer B, I'd say that's pretty obviously related
to something on Computer B.

And I'm 98% confident that Computer B hasn't got any detectable spyware problem.
At least from HJT viewpoint.

So 2 minutes to an hour, problem; repair or release-renew, problem goes away.
Power management not the problem. PingPlotter shows total connection drop when
problem occurs.

Describe Computer A and Computer B please. Hardware and software. Any major
differences between the 2?

When did you note the problem first? How long had Computers A and B been in
service, when problem first noted? Any changes to Computer B just before
problem noted?

Computer A has xp pro installed and connects with an integrated realtek nic,
it is an HP model 752n. They are pretty similar hardware wise, no big
differences that would effect this i dont think

I had this problem a few months now but never realized it was a problem and
thought at first it was just isp lag... never gave it much thought because i
could use my other computer for gaming and such, now im using computer B
only, because it has more speed/memory..( i cant remember what if any
changes/programs i made just before it started happening)

I will get my other computer here tommorow and compare settings on both, but
im pretty sure all visible settings are the same on both, it must be
something less visible causing the problem.

I did notice today that if i clear my arp cache using the arp -d command it
also repairs my connection without renewing the ip adress, does that give you
any more ideas what the problem could be?

This is really annoying because its so hard to fix a problem when ya dont
know exactly what is going wrong... thanks for the responses:)

I have been having the identical problem with two Win XP Pro computers
connected via ethernet to Linksys router to DSL modem. Both computers
multiple times during the day will lose Internet access with Internet
Explorer showing server not found page. Initially I thought it was ISP
problem but checking Connection Status shows proper IP, gateway and DNS
address and clicking repair button immediately restores IE functionality
after hitting Refresh. Just like you, connection icon in system tray shows
intermittent sending light but no receive light response. Clicking Repair
fixes problem every time, up to 10-20 fixes per day. So I am watching this
thread closely for answers also!

Chris

i changed my modem to connect using usb cable and it is a work around for the
problem, but theres no reason my ethernet should not work... im hopin to find
answers still...

i really dont think it is the network card since this computer is 2004
model, but i will try to install a pci nic card and see how that works.
