having real trouble with a cd/dvd drive. Help?

hi guys. i have a sony dvd/cd-rw crx 320e drive, and it's causing real
problems. It has been in my PC since i had it built for me, and it worked
fine for over a year. Then suddenly, it will only play DVDs, and will not
acknowledge ANY other type of disc.

If i put an audio cd or any cd-rom into the drive, i can hear it begin to
spin-up a few times, and then crunch to a halt. i obtained the updated
driver (NYK5) for the drive, but still it won't acknowledge the presence of
anything that isn't a DVD.

Any suggestions, guesses, or (hopefully) solutions would be most appreciated.

I assume you have tried a cleaning disk..? I also wonder were you got the
driver(NYK5) update from, It looks like a firmware update..? XP really
doesn't require driver installation for PNP optical devices.. What burning
app do you normally use, has it been updated lately..?
Hearing "crunch" sounds is not a good sign, tomorrow my be a good day to
shop for a replacement..

I have a Samsung 616 DVD-CDROM and have the exact same problem. I can play
DVD's, but no other disk is recognized.

I have gone through all the recommended troubleshooting steps from device
manager, I tried to update drivers, though the one running turned out to be
the most current. I shut down both my firewall and anti-virus, and that had
no effect.

I wonder if there is a conflict caused by one of the media players like
i-tunes, yahoo music or something like that. If I wait long enough, I get a
file corruption error; however, there are no further details and no other
indication of a file or memory corruption.

I am thoroughly exasperated.

I searched the Samsung web site and you need to fill in the blanks as to the
actual model # SD-616?.. This would help to (ID any drive specific info)
update your firmware for the drive if needed..

Look here too..

You might also try uninstalling the DVD-ROM drive in device manager, reboot
and let Windows find the device and reinstall it..
