I went into an old letter to use address etc. Inadvertantly saved new letter
without entering new details so I have overwritten old letter (great big long
one too!)
Is there any way I can retrieve the old letter?

It's too late to use Edit/Undo, I assume...

You can get back to the original ONLY if
1. your version of Word support making back up copies
2. the feature is activated in Tools/Options/Save
3. and you only used SAVE once (not multiple times)

Or, if you (or your network administrator) backs up your data. Then the original
might be on an old backup.

To add to what Cindy has said, if you have "Automatically create backup
copy" checked on the Save tab of Tools | Options, then look for "Backup of
<filename>.wbk" in the same folder as the document; you'll need to view "All
Files" to see it.
