Have i killed it????? Scanner R.I.P. ??

I've used my trusty AGFA Snapscan E40 for a good few years now and had
excellent results.

Well, I had some building work done so part of my kit i.e. the scanner was
neatly packed away into a box then into the loft where it stayed for about 3
months...now today I got it back out, connected it up....re-installed the
software , connected it all up................and............red and green
lines over the right hand side of the scanned image.

Hmmmm

Have I damaged the scanner?

Is something else to blame ?

Can I repair anything?

Or...

Is it time to buy a new scanner ?

All suggestions/help will be greatly received......

Given it's a 6-year old model, and was towards the bottom of their range
when it came out, I suspect a new scanner might be in order if this one
continues to not play ball. I do know an excellent repairer in
Edinburgh, but I am pretty sure the outcome would be 'beyond economic
repair' if you can't get it to start playing ball. As an example of how
prices have dropped, an Epson 3490 Photo is the current PC Pro A-list
choice and is well under £100.

Did you remember to lock it when you packed it away?

Yes, the scanner was in the locked position when i stored it away...
I suspect too that it will be beyond economic repair....as you say...it is a
few years old.....i might just try and get a cheap one local - I don't do
loads of scanning ....jus it does come in handy every now and again....

Just another thought..................

When I got the scanner out of the loft......the power lead was in a box
along with three more leads.......the really clever thing was that i didnt
have the leads marked as to which was which. I used the first lead that
fitted the port.....it a 12v one, hmmmm........what would happen if i
plugged a more powerful one in.

This might seem daft but could this be the cause of the problem?

A friend of mine complained of getting green and red lines all over his
scans. When I tried it on my set-up it was OK. The 'fault' was he was
using the wrong power supply. I found the voltage was too low (9v
instead of 12v). Using 13v (from an unregulated power supply, it was
meant to be 12v) incidentally, gave a completely black scan that could
be tweaked in Paintshop to yield some sort of image, but it was terrible.

As I have mentioned in another posting my mains adapter then packed up
and now I run the scanner from a 12v rechargeable gel battery.

Leo, you're a Top bloke......

Well,,, i've had the wrong powerlead plugged in................it must have
been too weak.........I got the proper one out......plugged it in and......

WAHEEEEYYYYY......perfect scans.

Cheers for this info as it convinced me to plug the more powerful one in.
