I have been trying for the last week to get Windows Xp Sp-2 to recognise the
4 Gig I have on my machine. I have read heaps of information on this site and
still can't get it right. I have fiddled and edited the boot.ini file until I
am going crazy so, I have included my boot.ini file information here for any
helpful suggestions..
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /

Also I would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas

Does the BIOS recognize the memory? If not, that's your problem. If it does,
but XP doesn't, what is xp showing for the amount of memory?

The BIOS shows 4 Gig and CPU-z shows 4 gig too

What is XP reconizing? It will be less than 4 GB's because of the amount
that PCI takes. I think ~3.5 GB is normal. There are a zillion articles on
the Internet about this.

OK, I think that is normal. Here is one link talking about it:

Do you have Windows XP Home Edition or Professional? Is it a 32 bit or 64
bit version?

Hope this helps.

These Articles refer but the mathematics are difficult to figure out /
understand:

Processor and memory capabilities of Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and
of the x64-based versions of Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888732/en-us

The amount of RAM reported by the System Properties dialog box and the
System Information tool is less than you expect after you install Windows XP
Service Pack 2

Unless you are trying to calculate a round trip to the Delta Quadrant you
will never even come close to using 4 Gigs of Ram.
I know this doesn't answer your ? but I just wanted to spare someone else
from wasting their money. :-)

It doesn't matter whether I use the 4 gig or not it is the principle of it.
But as a matter of interest I do do photo restoration where I got deep into
the pixels to do repairs as well as extensive video converting and editing.

MS states that this issue can occur because of a design change in Windows XP
SP2. Check out this article for more info:

Information tool is less than you expect after you install Windows XP Service
Pack 2

The 3.25 is all you get due to PCI addresses occupying the remaining
spaces. You are tilting at windmills, trying to "find the rest of the 4
gig".
