Is there a folder or file in the xp os that collects the
serial numbers of installed hardware, eg. cd-drive,
floppy drive, case etc.?

No.

Bruce;
Aida32 lists my Motherboard serial #, my Monitor serial # and my Gateway
System serial #, to name a few. What would these be if not hardware serial
#'s?

AIDA32 will do some of these things, free download. Google
will find it for you.

Jim;
I already have it. Have had it since having Windows98. According to
Mssr. Chambers, Aida32 won't. I am waiting for a clarification.

In general no. The information tools mentioned in another post do not
include serial numbers (The volume serial number of a disk partition is
a software item that changes on a re-format, nothing to do with actual
hardware). Some info will be in the product activation database, but
not in usable form, and not covering everything anyway

Scroll down and read the message from the OP again.

"Is there a folder or file in the xp os that collects the serial numbers of

The correct answer is no.

Aida32 doesn't come with XP.

1) AIDA32 is not part of WinXP. The OP didn't ask if any
non-Microsoft utilities might reveal such information.

2) Not all hardware manufacturers burn the components' serial
numbers into ROM, so there is no universal 3rd party solution.

I know that. That's not what the OP asked.
