Hardware/Software Changes?

Vista keeps trying to do a load screen. Saying the I Windows are incountered
a Hardware or Software change. It then gives me a recovery option or a boot
normal. I just reinstalled Windows Vista last night and haven't installed
anything other then the action tech modem. I then installed 6 updates from
Microsoft. I've had this issue since I got it. Now I did upgrade the Memory
from 256+256 Mb- 512 to 2 1gig sticks. Vista reads the memory and tells me
that they are both there. I thought that a Memory upgrade wouldn't mess with
the hardware/software issue. Not sure though since I built my own system with
Premium and love it. Its a Everex Stepnot VT2000. I have done the recovery 5
times and reinstall 3 times. I'm not sure if its the ram I upgraded to.
CORSAIR 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 533. Or if its not reading the Modem
correct or what. I'm slighly better then a average computer users. But my
system I built myself has no issues. This laptop is winning the battle.

Hi Josh,

If I am reading your post correctly then you have 2 machines - one you built
yourself which is problem free and the other a laptop which you are having
problems with. I notice that you have upgraded the ram in your laptop - does
your laptop support the amount of memory you are using? Check the manual. How
do you connect to the Internet with your other machine (not the laptop)? If
you connect from this machine via an Ethernet connection, you could try
seeing if that connection works on your laptop (assuming, of course, that it
has got an Ethernet port). Before you do that, perform a 'System Restore' on
your laptop so that it is in the same system state as it was in before you
installed the action tech modem and the Microsoft updates (alternatively,
reinstall Vista again, but do not install the modem). If you are now able to
start your machine then it could be that either the modem and/or its driver
is incompatible with your laptop or that the Microsoft updates caused the
problem - were these 6 updates optional ones? If they were, and they were for
hardware, then I recommend that you only download drivers and updates for
your hardware directly from the hardware manufacturer (in your case, probably
the laptop manufacturer) and not from Microsoft.

I agree 100% with you.
First. The updates were from microsoft. I didn't install any drivers that
vista game options on. I did one at a time. Because in the past I have had
alot of them not install. So I did them one at a time.
Second- I ran a memtest86 and it passed. all 1983MB.
Third- I will admit to not doing the modem from startup. But installing it
wirelessly. (Will have to recovery windows and try again it nothing else
works (5 time though, little frusterating.) 3 installs also
fourth- I matched the Ram pinn-sett and DDR2 @ 533. I wouldn't put a 667 or
more on the laptop when the board woulnd't hang. It also supports upto @ gigs
Fifth. I finally got a error. and it said to test MEMORY OR CPU> or BIOS. I
have a phoenix Bios. Can't find a update ANYWHERE. e-mailed twice in two
months and they are worthless. They tell me to talk to EVEREX. I tested the
CPU. The error though is saying my CPU might be running better then my
current bios setup. Can't find any update though. THAT IS my issue I think.
IF not I will try the third point all over again.
6th. It might be a wireless issue also. NOT SURE! That gives me a option to
go forward with and look into. Desktop is LAN! Laptop is Wireless.
LAST- THE CRAZY PART. I can load windows without a problem. 200 times in the
same day. but every time I start windows the next day for the first time. I
get an error. EVERY DAY when I start it up when I get home from work. (ps. no
one else is on it either, just to preanswering that thought) Also I dont get
a error code I would of searched it and also posted it.

Dwarf thank you and maybe with a little more help from you or other I might
crack VISTA after all.

Hi Ortega,

Thanks for the reply. The next time you start your machine , enter your BIOS
(refer to the manual for instructions on how to do this, it usually involves
pressing either 'Del' or 'Esc' or 'F2').When you have done this, look for the
option 'Reset Configuration Data' (or similar) and check this option. Restart
your machine. Does your problem persist? I notice from your post that the
problem occurs when you first use your machine in the day and that you don't
have problems after that. It is quite possible that the cause of your problem
might be a faulty battery - check this by running your laptop on battery
only. If your laptop fails to start on battery but starts when plugged in
then this indicates a fault with your battery. This can sometimes be solved
by removing and reinserting the battery if the fault is caused by faulty
connections preventing the battery from being charged correctly. It is also
possible that since you upgraded the memory you might need to upgrade your
battery for one of a higher capacity. As for your wireless issue, refer to
the manual for your modem/router. Some require you to have a direct cable
link whilst you setup parameters on your machine and modem/router.

I like that idea, didn't know that since I hate laptops. I played with the
bios setups to get them to load from different sectors. Going to see how that
works today. I will play with the Bios more if it doesn't on the ideas that
you laid out.
I did check with the modem and it does work with Vista and is able to boot
from Wireless connection or a direct lan connection. I even played with the
settings in the modem. Didn't change anything in the end. I'm praying that
since I moved USB to the bottom to boot from it might be the issue!. We
will see. I normally don't boot from Battery since When I'm on it I am there
for a couple hours. I will try to BOOT from battery only today though. It
never hurts. I will do some research online about battery issues. I just need
compaines to help me out. PHX BIOS, COSAIR, MICROSOFT (Who is claiming there
is no issue with VISTA) Hard to believe! or Everex. I will ck those settings
though on the bios if my first little idea doesn't pass.

I'm just going to try a new Harddrive. I'm sick of trying to figure this out.
Maybe one day I will figure it out. Not sure but I can't find any great error
in my even viewer to tell me anything. I know never to buy a product now
since you don't know what quality of junk they are going to send you.
