via remote desktop over vpn (from an xp pro box), is there any way to tell
if a w2k advanced server has hardware raid installed ?

By its very nature Windows does not know anything about hardware RAID.
It only shows info presented to it by the RAID controller. You would
have to use a utility desiged to talk to the RAID controller to get RAID
status.
