Hardware profile

Hi,
I am trying to setup a Hardware profile in Windows XP on
a laptop for one of our users. When the the employee is
home, I wanted him to be able to boot-up so he can use
dhcp with his cable modem. When he is in the office, I
wanted him to boot-up and have a pre-configured static IP
address. I went into hardware profiles and made a copy of
his current profile and called it "Home User". I
configured it to show during the boot-up process in
addition to the default profile which will be the static
IP for the office use. When I logged in as the home user
and changed the IP address to Dhcp, it also changed the
static IP for the office back to dhcp. Is there something
I am doing wrong?

The best way to have static IP and dhcp configurations on the same laptop is
to use the Alternate Configuration option in the TCP/IP properties page.
What this will do is cause the network to first try dhcp, and then use the
static IP if dhcp is unavailable.

To set this up:
1. open the properties page for the desired network
(Open Network Connections; right-mouse on the network; select
Properties)
2. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) on General tab
3. Hit Properties button and select Alternate Configuration tab
4. Enter the static IP and other alternate configuration info.
5. Select dhcp on the General tab.

In one of our offices, we have put static IP's on the
laptops due to problems entering a VPN instead of using
dhcp. Both ways will work to get to the internet, but
only static will work to get to the vpn. Is there a way
to only have the alternate profile/IP's launch instead of
the primary since both will be seen as valid?
