Hardware Firewall and Vista

Will be installing Vista Ultimate and a low end WatchGuard Firewall. Is
there anything in Vista that would facilitate the configuration of the
firewall and maximize compatibility and security with the OS? Guidance
sought.

No. Your third-party firewall should come with its own configuration
utility. Check in its Help files and/or manual.

I also have a Linksys wireless router with VPN. The VPN feature only allows
pass-through connectivity and is essentially a 'port forwarding' mechanism.
Looking for guidance on how connecting to ports allows one to negotiate the
router and remotely access my desktop

That information would be in your Linksys manual and/or on the Linksys
