I have windows xp home. I have an external hard drive
(buslink) I shut down the computer and the external drive
and now when I boot up the computer the drive letter for
the external hard drive is gone. How do I restore it.
will I have to do a complete reintstall of the software
for the external hard drive? It won't work just doing a
system restore.

Presume the ext. drive is USB. Check device manager to see
that the port is working correctly. When you shutdown the
ext. drive, what procedure did you follow?

Try unplugging the drive and reboot the computer, then plug
the drive back into the same port.
