My Sony laptop drive is failing and I am planning on purchasing a Seagate
drive from Newegg. Two drives I am looking at are 80 and 120 gbs in size yet
only 2.00 difference in price. So I would like to get the larger of the two.
However I an not sure my Recovery cds will recognize
the larger drive. My laptop was purchased in May 2002 and I think is pre
SP1. Will I have a problem if I select the 120gb drive.

Nevermind I just realized they do not have the larger drive in stock at this
time.

It's not the recover CD's that need to recognize the drive, it's the system
BIOS. What size drive do you have now? If an 80GB works it's very likely a
120GB will work.

My laptop's current drive is the 20 gb OEM drive. However on another
forum devoted to the FX and FXA series notebooks people have successfully
installed 120 and up drives. So I presume my bios will recognize an 80 gb
drive no problem.

I had a really old laptop with a 2GB drive (The max available at the time) I
have just installed a new 120GB Hitachi no problems. 137GB is the limit
before you need 48 Bit LBA

Most recovery CDs are specific to the original hard drive size that
was shipped with your laptop. If / when you do replace the hard drive
with a larger size, you will should need to follow:

1) Install at least Service Pack 2 (if not already integrated into
the recovery)

2) Locate a partition editor tool like the old Partition Magic.

3) Create a newer set of the recovery CD (find info off the Internet)

Usually a recovery system contains an image of the hard drive partition
(s.) When you use it, it "restores" the partition(s) as they were
when the image was taken.

I would highly recommend that whatever drive you get, make sure it's a
7,200 rpm drive. You'll appreciate the performance benefits.

No. If it recognizes the 80GB drive without aid, 120 should be no problem
regarding the bios. 137GB is the limitation at that time without aid from
XP SP1 and higher. You're only real concern is the recovery may only create
the partition size it was originally set to make. You have to make use of
the rest of the space after XP is installed usiing XP's disk manager making
another partition in NTFS format.

Simple answer is Match Price and add 20 cent a foot expediting charge.
That way the customer gets what he wants, and deserves!
