Hard drives work all the time

M

Markgoldin

Are there any known facts about unusual hard drives activity when computer
is running Vista?
I have AMD Athlon 64 X2 and two RAID 0: 2 Raptors and 2 Seagates.

Thanks

If it is a new computer, it is just indexing tha whole system, and will
settle down.

It is new, but I dont have too much data or apps. installed.
Hope, it will settle down.

1/ indexing

2/ defragging

3/ shuffling files around to speed boot up

4/ pre-loading files into memory it "thinks" you're going to use - again to
speed things up

In other words, it's doing good stuff. Most of the disk activity is due to
the indexing, which - as the previous poster said - will stop after a few
days.

Why does disk activity bother you? It's not like it hurts or anything, is
it?

It stops after a few days. It only irritates those who don't know what
or why it's happening.

It also reminds those of us who've had viruses and whatnot in the past of how our machines sounded as those viruses and spyware programs were munching away. I'm forever worrying that I've let some kind of trojan in. There's nothing there when I test for same, but...that's what makes me nervous when I see the hard drive constantly going. I had no idea Vista was such a busy little OS...

Yes and it will continue forever if you keep shifting around files..
Also you will see that it will most probably create erroneous results if you
move around files or delete them too often.

Then you will have to redo the indexing from scratch! lol its a nightmare..
that's why I say indexing is stupid.

disable indexing from the services... or you can also isolate it to only
specific folders..
because if you have lots of documents for example in my documents it will
take ages...

I had indexing working for 15 days to do mine.. and it never finished
totally for the reasons I said above.

Ignore frank.. he doesn't know much about computers, he has a limited
understanding and experience
of how vista reacts under various scenarios. I wonder if he ever uses the
computer he has for anything else
than posting insults in this newsgroup.

Its a freakish horrid monster OS....

Disable everything that causes hard disks to thrash.. I did.

Shifting files around...now there's something many users actually do
using Vista with no problems whatsoever. That is simply not a problem.

Really? You actually believe that? Where do you get this misinformation
from? You just make it up don't you? Because there is not one shred of
truth in that statement.

Obviously, you've either got an infected computer or else you have no
idea what you're doing in Vista. I think the latter is probably more
true than the former.

Frank uses computers on a network (as of this Monday only Vista
Ultimate!) in a daily business environment in a marketing/advertising
company (he owns) where there are daily deadlines to meet. Whereas you
(whatever name you're currently assuming) are unemployed and have no
idea how Vista will really function in a real, for profit, daily
business atmosphere.

Prove me wrong, if you can!

That's really bad advice and only a short term solution to a problem
that does not really exist.
You disseminate misinformation to people looking for truthful answers.
The correct answer to the initial accessing of the HDD is to let it
finish...which it will do.
Then you'll have a fast, more efficient Vista operating system.
Your short term solution will never let Vista fully complete it designed
functionality and in fact cripples Vista from operating the way it was
designed. That's a horrible thing to do!
You seem to think that you know more about how Vista should be designed
than MS who actually designed it! Your idea is to dumb down Vista to the
level of XP because that’s how you think it should be.
Well you’re wrong and don’t seem able to admit it and which is why you
don't like Vista. Let Vista be Vista. It's not XP!!!
Finally, you need to stop giving out bad info concerning Vista.

using Vista with no problems whatsoever. That is simply not a problem.

Copying and moving files around in Vista is a royal pain in the butt
for MANY, I dare say MOST users and an admitted problem with a hot fix
provided by Microsoft that only partially works.
Really? You actually believe that?

I wouldn't believe anything either you or Justin say since you're both
nothing but hot heads and trolls always looking to fight with
somebody.
Obviously, you've either got an infected computer or else you have no
idea what you're doing in Vista. I think the latter is probably more

I was thinking that of you since I haven't seen you give accurate
advice on anything yet.

prove?

LOL you are stupid!!!

Oh this is good.. with your charismatic idiotic personality Im sure you are
attracting lots of clients!
That explains the installation of Vista.. since no serious work environment
would install vista before at LEAST
service pack1...

You are such a loser... lol..Frank... put a sock in it.. the more you talk
the worse the picture gets...

Its better to not give any more of that information out...

Hey bozo...you don't have any answer do you? You don't use Vista in any
kind of a real working business environment do you? So you're really not
qualified to evaluate it's pros & cons in a real world environment are you.
No lying now, ok. We've all have enough of your lies.
You're just a stupid incompetent liar and lack any real computer or
business knowledge and you post here to only get attention. My advice is
to get another dog live up a tree.

Look who's talking...

Hint: Indexing at best only marginally speeds up file retrieval and
then only under certain situations. It can safely be turned off and
most people won't notice any meaningful difference... accept that it
may stop that hard drives from trashing constantly.
Your short term solution will never let Vista fully complete it designed
functionality and in fact cripples Vista from operating the way it was
designed. That's a horrible thing to do!

Hey Frank, stick to trying to peddle your MLM crap or whatever you
claim you do, you don't know s*it about Windows or computers.
You seem to think that you know more about how Vista should be designed
than MS who actually designed it!

IT was DESIGNED to be turned off or on. Duh!
Your idea is to dumb down Vista to the
level of XP because that’s how you think it should be.

Memo to Frank... XP has file indexing also.
Well you’re wrong and don’t seem able to admit it and which is why you
don't like Vista.

I don't like blowhards that PRETEND they know stuff they obviously
don't.
Let Vista be Vista. It's not XP!!!
Finally, you need to stop giving out bad info concerning Vista.
Frank

LOL! Try that yourself. I got better things to do then to correct you,
but it is fun to watch Frank dance and jump and down.

Some putz that admits he runs a marketing company is suppose to be
taken seriously as a computer "expert"? Now if you wanted to jabber
about some sugar pill that's suppose to cure cancer and is sold
exclusively through some pyramid scheme, that would be more up your
alley.

no...

they are to add features.
