when you first installed the drive you must have partitioned it incorrectly

There is a jumper setting on the back of some drives that limits them to
32gb.. the way that Windows shows drive size, it would appear as 30gb..
check jumper settings.. remove any unnecessary jumpers, then use Disk
Management to reclaim the lost space..

Windows XP will only create FAT32 up to 32 gig partitions. If you want
to create and format a 40 gig as FAT32 you will have to use one of the
DOS Windows versions of FDISK.

could you tell me how to remove unecessary jumpers, I know you just switch
them up or down but who can you tell what to switch?

The jumpers located on hard drives are not switches that you can just
flick.. got to the hard drive manufacturer web site for info on the jumper
settings and then compare with the settings on the back of the hard drive..
there will probably be two jumpers set, one for 'master' and the other for
the 32 gb limit.. remove the appropriate jumper if fitted..

Good luck

But you didn't do it using Windows XP, which is what I told you. You may
want to Press F1 and read up on FAT32 for WindowsXP.
