I have a Compaq Presario 5315Ks. it has a ATA/66 ultra harddrive. Can this unit support a ATA/100 ultra harddrive???. Only looking to upgrade for mother-in-law. she doesn't need new unit.
I don't know if it will run at ATA100 speeds, but ATA100 drives should be backwards compatible if the chipset only supports ATA66. The performance benefit of ATA100 isn't really much at all, so you won't notice much difference in speed if that is the case (generally speaking it won't reach anywhere near 66mb/s peak transfer).
I understand about not being much difference in the performance. It's just that trying to find a harddrive larger than 80G in the ATA/66 is very hard to find if it can be found at all. Thx for the input.
Yes, they are backwards compatible, even 133 drives.
