Hard Drive Spinning Noise

I'm trying to quiet down the high-pitched noise originating from my Western
Digital HD. I just upgraded to quieter CPU and case fans, and now I really
notice how much noise the HD makes. It's not really coming from the drive
itself, but seems to propagate through the case. There is a significant
difference in my PCs noise when it is suspended and the HD is not spinning,
and when it's awake. I don't really mind the fan blowing noise, but the hard
drive really bothers me. I do have a cheap case, but is there anything I can
do short of replacing the case? Would mounting the drive with fiber washers
on the screw holes help?

Yes there is.
Some of the better made cases, such as the Antec line use rubber washers
between the drive cage and the hdd. They make the cage a little wider to
accommodate the quite thick 1/8' thickness for the washers on each side. A
couple of times I've taken an old bicycle tube and cut it apart to make
washer inserts to place between the sides of the cage and the drive itself
and then use the mounting screws. It does quiet things down a bit. You could
try the fiber washers, but I'd go with rubber first.

the WD drives are just loud. i finally got rid of my WD1200JB and replaced
it with a samsung SP1614N. that drive is nearly silent, just a little seek
noise.

Thanks. I just inserted some rubber washers, but it didn't seem to make much
difference. Maybe the drive is just loud like "Wooducoodu" said.
