Hi,

I need to replace my hard disk soon as it is about to die immenently!!

I am looking for a 160GB drive, IDE, 7200RPM or better and most importantly
that it is quiet.

Was looking at the Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 160GB UDMA100.

I would appreciate any views on this drive or recommendations on others,

Cheers

Make sure your system can support a 160GB drive. To go above 128GB,
(137 GB, drive makers' size), requires 48 bit LBA BIOS and WinXP SP1.

The new Seagate drives are quiet, and they now come with a three year
warranty. 7200RPM is good, the 10000RPM ones run hotter, and may be not
as quiet.

The current Samsung Spinpoint drives are extremely quiet and excel in
particular when it comes to seek noise - hardly makes any difference to
drive noise overall unlike many others which sound like there's a little man
inside tapping with a hammer when read activity occurs (unless acoustic
management is enabled). The Samsung P80 series even has the option of
enabling acoustic management but just why you'd want to do so on a drive
that's almost silent in its normal state would be the question. Samsung P80
drives normally come with a 3 year warranty in the UK (compared to the
deathstars 1 year). You'd have a choice of 80 GB, 120 GB or 160 GB, the
latter 2 with either a 2 MB buffer or for a slightly higher price 8 MB.

I have 4 of these drives (120 GB 2 MB Buffer versions SP1203N) in my RAID
setup on my home server and when it comes to drive noise, silence is
golden!Performance is average for 7200 RPM drives and they offer ATA 133
capability.

Thanks fo rthe reply.

I like the look of the Seagate 160GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model
ST3160021A drive.

I have a fairly old motherboard, the ABit KR7A - RAID board.

Do you know if this board has a bios update that will recognise drives
greater than 137Gb?

The current bios release "likely" does add 48bit LBA (HDD >
138GB) support. Also the Highpoint RAID controller bios
does support 48bit LBA after board bios update, but beware
of a data corruption issue on the HPT RAID controller's
drive, involved with upgrading bios, and you "Might" need a
newer RAID driver too, which should be upgraded, installed
prior to flashing the bios bios, ESPECIALLY if you're
booting Windows from the RAID controller drive(s) to avoid
potential of needing repair or reinstall of windows.
