Hard Drive Problems???

S

Sam

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP3) installed,
with a primary HD and a secondary internal physical HD. The second HD is
divided into three volumes, D, E, and F, with volume D for page file only,
volume E for image backups, and volume F for data backup. Saturday, I
noticed a warning in the event viewer, System Folder, after I had completed
an image backup with Symantec Livestate Recovery Desktop to my external USB
HD. The error was as follows:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: 11/8/2008
Time: 8:29:33 PM
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXXXX
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging
operation.

I also noticed that the backup image created could not be verified. So I
completed another image backup and it was successful and did not see any
further disk error entries as noted above. I am wondering if the second
physical HD
or the external HD is beginning to show some type of failure or maybe it is
a windows software problem? Every thing on the computer appears to be
working okay before and after this problem. I have the program HD Tune
installed and it does not show any
HD problems. I should note that I have not changed anything on my computer
other than the monthly windows security updates. Any suggestions and
comments would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Sam.

P.S I checked with Google but could not find anything definitive or that I
could understand about the event warning!!

Go to the website of your HD's mfg
and download the free diagnostic

If it says your drive is bad...
replace it at once.

If it tests OK...
I'd run a RAM test

Harddisk2 would be the external USB drive, not the 2 internal drives.
Basically a USB external drive can transfer data at speeds below 30
Megabytes-per-Second. Internal PATA or SATA drives are capable
of speeds in excess of 70 Meg. Most times USB drives do not use
Write Behind Caching so data transfers in a continuous stream. The
event log entry is not uncommon when doing "LARGE" data transfers
to a USB drive.

A quick check to verify the volume is in a consistent state is doing a
Read-Only or cursory Chkdsk from a Command Prompt window.
Chkdsk C: [Enter]
A summary will indicate the health of the volume. If errors are found
Chkdsk will recommend another pass of Chkdsk with a /F or /R
qualifier.
*Never do Chkdsk with /F /R unless the volume is backed up and
Verified.

R.McCarty, many thanks for your detailed reply and for identifying the HD
that is in question. The external HD used for my image backups is about six
years old (Seagate desk top model) and no doubt that does not help the
situation. Will go ahead and run the Chkdsk check you suggested but
Probably it is time to change that HD for a new one!! Thanks again, Sam.
