Hard Drive Issues with XP Pro

I used a file eraser that rewrites over my unused disc space.
I had 70 gigs of free space until I used this eraser software.
Now I only have 21 gigs after the eraser software rewrote =0(
I used system restore to no avail #$^&%&*^%
What the hell happened????
Do I have to reformat now to get my hard drive back the way it was before I
erased?

It's extremely difficult for anyone to answer your question if
you don't even tell us what program you used.

Sorry about the lack on important info.
I am using Eraser 5.7. Seems that I may have found the issue.
Appears to be a folder in Eraser that I need to delete to possibly correct
the problem.
I will keep you posted if it works.
