I'm running a new/clean install of XP Pro on my system
with ASUS MB, Intel Pent 4, Hyperthread,etc....... Bios is
current and fine. Power options advise to power down HD
after 1 hour if system not being used....

I notice that the HD light is always running and the HD is
on with XP.... My other computers (ie Win98/ME, and my
kids Win2K) drive light vary off and on as data is
processed or the HD is used.... which is normal. At idle,
the light is off. If I take my older Win98SE hd and
install it into my current system it runs normally and the
HD light works normally. If i reconnect my HD with XP on
it....same problems occurs.... the HD light is always on
and it never turns off.

If it were not for my HD cooling fans my HD would be hot
as a firecracker. What in the XP op system is causing my
HD to always run ? I also have tried to eliminate any
other devices in the background (ie AV programs, etc) but
the HD light and HD keep running at idle.

Try turning off automatic updates and see if that helps.

Hi,

Suggestion:

Run the Task Manager, go to View/Select Columns, and turn on the following
columns: "I/O Read Bytes" and "I/O Write Bytes." This will give you details
as to which process is accessing the disk.

Kelly,

Did it. The 2 programs running my hard drive down are the
LSA Shell(LSASS.exe)(export version) in the sys32 folder
and CRSS.EXE client server run time process (part of XP).

I am not sure what these 2 programs do..... but they are
always running my hard drive........

Any thoughts ???? Since it is part of XP i am assuming i
cannot terminate/stop them without problems.... but you
can set a kinda priority......what if i moved it to low ?
