Hard drive crashes, can't boot. Maxtor 120G

After trying to copy a music CD, the computer freezes. After rebooting
3/4 into Windows it can't find file ntskrnl.exe and quits. I'd tried
an Emergency repair disk with no luck. A message keeps appearing
saying I/O disk failure. Trying a fresh reinstall win2000 will only
show, "unable to acces drive C." Tried a startup disk, and typed in
FDISK only to find no disk present. Tried Maxtor disk partition tool
only find that it cannot write to drive C then quits. Is this (4 month
old) 120 G Maxtor physically broken or is it just a software/virus
glitch?

Download & run the disk diagnostic tool that Maxtor make
available free of charge on their home site.

Hi,

First you should try unplugging the cables to the drive and plugging
them back in. Does the hard drive light blink when you boot?

Most likely you drive is dead. run the powermax from maxtor website.
if its just 4 months, you should be still in warranty.
happened to me couple of weeks ago, 2 years old 40Gb maxtor. exactly
your symptoms.

Update:
Hard drive model 6y120po return a code using the diagnotic tools
mentioned:

de6a6571
Partition info failed.
Smart enable function failed.
Hard drive is failing.

I manage to bring up the drive by rearranging the jumper settings but
cannot format. Partition works. Try formating several times on a
Seagate but instead causes a loss of data on the Seagate which results
no boot at all. I did not kept the receipt and, aestheticly, the hard
drive labels/ serial # are ripped off.
